(VEN) - In the first 10 months of 2014, the export value of agricultural, forest and seafood products reached US$25.39 billion, a rise of 11.2 percent compared with the same period last year. Specifically, the export value of major agricultural products reached an estimated US$12.25 billion, up 11.5 percent; seafood exports US$6.48 billion, up 19.9 percent.

Rice, coffee exports remain high

Data from the Center for Informatics and Statistics under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) show that in October, Vietnam exported 669,000 tonnes of rice worth US$317 million. In the first 10 months of 2014, Vietnam exported 5.68 million tonnes of rice worth US$2.59 billion, down 2.7 percent in volume but up 1.2 percent in value compared with the same period last year. The average export price of Vietnamese rice in the first nine months of 2014 was US$455.26 per tonne, up 3.6 percent compared with the same period last year.

China remained the largest importer of Vietnamese rice (32.48 percent of Vietnamese rice exports in the first nine months of 2014 were to China). Notably, rice exports to the Philippines grew by 3.19 times in volume and 3.23 times in value compared with the same period last year. The Philippines has become the second largest importer of Vietnamese rice, accounting for a market share of 22.06 percent, followed by Malaysia, Ghana and Singapore with respective market shares of 7.07 percent, 5.76 percent and 3.19 percent.

Meanwhile, coffee exports remained stable. In October, Vietnam exported an estimated 101,000 tonnes of coffee worth US$220 million. In the first 10 months of 2014, Vietnam exported 1.49 million tonnes of coffee worth US$3.10 billion, up 37.1 percent in volume and 33.5 percent in value compared with the same period last year.

The average export price of coffee in the first nine months of 2014 was US$2,076 per tonnes, down 3.2 percent compared with 2013. Coffee exports to Belgium grew by 2.6 times in volume and 2.4 times in value compared with the first nine months of 2013.

Rubber, tea exports decline

In the first 10 months of 2014, despite a 1.5 percent increase in the export volume compared with the same period last year, the export value of rubber decreased by 25.7 percent, reaching US$1.45 billion. The average export price of rubber in the first nine months of 2014 was US$1,767 per tonne, down 25.46 percent compared with the same period last year. China and Malaysia remained the two largest importers of Vietnamese rubber despite a decline in their imports. Specifically, rubber exports to China decreased by 8.65 percent in volume and 31.41 percent in value while exports to Malaysia decreased by 11.57 percent in volume and 38.23 percent in value.

Tea exports also dropped by 5.6 percent in volume and 0.6 percent in value. However, the average export price of Vietnamese tea slightly increased, reaching US$1,693 per tonne, up 6.03 percent. Pakistan, a traditional importer of Vietnamese tea, continued to hold a dominant position (tea exports to Pakistan grew 67.64 percent in volume and 94.40 percent in value). Meanwhile, tea exports to Indonesia decreased by 57.16 percent in volume and 58.28 percent in value.

To boost the export of agricultural, forest and seafood products in the rest of 2014 towards the US$28.5 export value target, the MARD said that it would expand international cooperation to improve the quality of export products. At the same time, it will concentrate on facilitating business access to capital sources, increase lending limits and extend the time for debt payment./.
